American Legend was formed in 1986 through a merger of two well-known and highly respected fur farmer organizations. The Great Lakes Mink Association (GLMA) and the Mutation Mink Breeders Association (EMBA) combined their resources to form American Legend.

The Great Lakes Mink Association (GLMA) was formed in 1941 by a group of pioneering mink ranchers living in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Through extensive research and determination, these enterprising fur ranchers developed a unique strain of perfect black mink. Trademarked as BlackglamaŽ, this mink is the world's finest natural dark mink. BlackglamaŽ is the richest, deepest, most lustrous dark mink with the lightest, most flexible leather. BlackglamaŽ is the standard that all black mink is measured against.

The following year, a group of ranchers who specialized in the production of unique mutation breeds of mink formed the Mutation Mink Breeders Association (EMBA). Through genetic management, EMBA breeders developed a series of natural clear bright colors. Superior color and quality represent the distinguishing characteristics of American Legend™ mink.
